Dunkin’ Donuts is the new kid in town
BY CONNOR BORTZ
The new and upcoming arrival of Dunkin’ Donuts to our hometown marks the second recent landing of a well-recognized business chain in the Fairfax community. The first being Chipotle that opened after Wendy’s shut down in the same spot two years ago.
What does this mean for the community? What effects could this have on other stores in the area?
Dunkin’ Donuts, “America’s all-day every day favorite coffee and baked goods stop,” is an American global doughnut company and coffeehouse chain based in Canton, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1948 as Open Kettle by William Rosenberg in Quincy, Massachusetts. Two years later, the name was then changed to Dunkin’ Donuts.
The company primarily competes with Starbucks, as over half the company’s business is in coffee sales, and with Krispy Kreme for doughnut sales.
As in any good arch rivalry, only half a mile down the road is the Mariemont Starbucks, who will now be competing for coffee sales.
Dunkin’ Donuts, although known mostly by their coffee sales, have moved to more variety in their new menu. The bakery now has expanded to include more than donuts: bagels, cookies, danishes, and muffins have been added.
Carson L. Shelton, mayor of the Fairfax community, believes that this new addition will greatly benefit the community.
In the short term, this new location is hoping to attract people of all ages as a quick breakfast or coffee stop. “Many people have been excited to hear a Dunkin’ Donuts is coming (to Fairfax),” says Shelton. “So we believe there is a strong desire for breakfast-type restaurant, especially on the way to downtown Cincinnati where a lot of people work.”
Junior Parker Sullivan, who is a legal driver and avid coffee consumer of Mariemont High School, thinks that having a new coffee and dount place nearby is a great idea.
“Coming from the Northeast–which is where I was born–there was a Dunkin’ Donuts basically everywhere you looked,” says Sullivan. “Coming here I had to drive 10-15 minutes just to get a cup of coffee, but now I don’t have to with this new shop in my backyard.”
“You could say I’m really excited about it,” adds Sullivan. “But when does it open?”
This new addition to the Fairfax community is scheduled to open in late September or early October of this year. Once the construction is finished, the developers will be able to give a more accurate opening date.
Thanks to the new menu variety, Dunkin’ will see a new group of people every morning before school, including Mariemont High School student Mary Uehlin.
“I can’t wait for the new store to go in,” says Uehlin, who lives just down the road from the new store location. “I’m going to leave early every day to get coffee and a breakfast sandwich.”
If the past gives us any indication of what we can expect from this new business, Dunkin’ Donuts should be a major hit for children and adults alike. “Our hopes is that they will become an established business that will remain there for years to come,” concludes Shelton.
